Fonkoze, a Haitian foundation that supports the organized poor, provides essential banking services throughout the country and assists borrowers with literacy, business training, and health education. Fonkoze has over $5 million in savings deposits with over half that amount out in loans. Less than 2% of all the loans are overdue by more than 30 days, which is an extraordinary statistic given that most loan recipients live at subsistence level. Fonkoze has miraculously held together despite Haiti’s major political unrest followed by two major hurricanes that destroyed much of the country.

The Untours Foundation has a $25,000 loan out to Foncoze. Repayment does not begin for several years.
