Fonkoze, a Haitian foundation and microfinance institution, supports the very poor, providing essential banking services throughout the country and assisting borrowers with literacy, business training, and health education. Fonkoze has over $10 million in savings deposits with over 90% of that out in loans. Less than 2% of all the loans are overdue by more than 30 days, which is an extraordinary statistic given that most loan recipients live at subsistence level. Fonkoze has miraculously held together despite Haiti’s major political unrest and major hurricanes that destroyed much of the country.
