Acheivers Hall of Fame (2012)
One of Hal's former employers, Springfield High School, Springfield, PA, gave him this lifetime achievement award. Hal and a few colleagues, like Harry LeFever, were ahead of their times combining classes like history and English bringing both topics to life. Read more.
Community Service Award, Media, PA (2011)
Norma and Hal won this award from the Media Borough Council in honor of all they have done for their amazing home town.
Marie Whitaker Humanitarian Award (2011)
Hal's local and international work addressing social justice issues won him this award from the Media Fellowship House. It's named for one of the founders of the Fellowship House, created in 1944 when incident of racial prejudice in Media, PA, led two women, one black, one white, to realize the need for a place where an integrated community could be fostered.
B Lab, the non-profit engine behind the B Corp movement inspiring businesses worldwide to address economic and social issues, honored Hal twice by naming their new annual award after him and by presenting him with the first one. Lifetime Achievement Award (2008)
At the 2008 Philadelphia Sustainability Awards, Hal was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his ongoing commitment to social justice. The awards are sponsored by seven entities including the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the City of Philadelphia.
Spirit of Philadelphia Award (2007)
Hal received the 14th annual Spirit of Philadelphia Award from Greater Philadelphia Cares, an organization that promotes volunteerism. The award celebrates the community service involvement of the local business community, and applauds their ongoing commitment to improving the region the Untours Foundation calls home.
Most Generous Company in America (1999)
The Newman's Own/George Award, given by Paul Newman and John F. Kennedy, Jr., recognized Untours, our main funder, as the "Most Generous Company In America." The award included $250,000, which Hal and Norma naturally donated to the Untours Foundation. "Untours's giving is creative in every sense of the word. Their low-interest loans literally create jobs among the hard-core unemployed and housing in decaying urban centers," Paul Newman said on the occasion.
